Taking our breathing for granted...
When it comes to breathing we all take it for granted. As long as we are alive we breath there is no other way. Well... Yes and No. Yes there is no other way you are right, as long as we breath we are alive however the quality of life is what we are taking about here. If you could increase your lung capacity, you will be able to deliver more oxygen into your blood and therefor benefit the cells of your body including your brain. Now, you can imagine the change in quality when your body is healthy and your mind is clear
How do you feel is most important!
As I mentioned already in regards to Hatha Yoga Asanas the most important thing about breathing exercise, is how you feel at the end of your practice and how much it effects your life in a positive way. This is the true bottom line. As none of us wants to do things that do not make us feel good. At least not with the right attitude which is a must when practicing Pranayama.
So if after a practice...
You feel great, as if you just landed on cloud nine, you feel a sense of happiness and joy that you have never felt before due to the dramatic increase in concentration. You feel centered and focused due to balancing the flow of prana . You find that you can control your emotions easier and
make decisions faster. You can work longer hours without getting tired and....lots more...
Now if that is the case wouldn't you want to give it a try? Hey it can change your life. Even if you didn't land on cloud nine, at least you will improve your health in both body and mind.
What is Pranayama and why do we use breathing exercise?
Pranayama is the science of regulating / controlling / manipulating (using for various purposes such as healing) the flow of Prana or life force.
Breathing exercise leads to Pranayama! The fruit of your practice should be very sweet as the control of prana brings about peace of mind. As a result of that peace of mind a deep sense of unconditional happiness awaken.
Climbing on the Raja Yoga Ladder...
Pranayama is the 4th out of the 8th limbs of Raja Yoga. One of the wonderful effects of exercising breath control is the ability to achieve mind control or the control over your thought waves. That occur naturally since Prana is if you will, the wind that moves those thought waves within your mind.
Now you can understand why the next natural state that Pranayama leads to according to Patanjali Maharishi is Pratyahara which is the withdrawal of the senses from their sense objects and the refocus of your attention to your inner Self
Starting to practice Breathing exercise - Pranayama
When you start to practice Pranayama start slow. There is no need to rush. By slow i mean start with a comfortable ratio. A ratio that you can go on with for as many rounds as you choose. Gradually increase the ratio. See Yoga breathing techniques for detailed instructions and practical tips for a successful practice.
